Relatives of a National Unity Platform supporter say one of them went missing in November last year and they suspect she could have been arrested by the security agencies.

Rose Kankindi had been an active member of the opposition political party led by Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu.

They say her disappearance came after she participated in the last year’s preparations to welcome Mr Kyagulanyi back home from America and Europe when his supporters threatened to organize one million match from the Entebbe Airport to Kampala but the security operatives arrested him after the plane landed on the tarmac.

“We don’t know where she could be. We kindly request the government to look for her because she is Ugandan and the government has the duty and responsibility to protect her,” said one of the relatives who didn’t want to be named because of fear of retribution.

Kyagulanyi, a pop star-turned-politician, lost to veteran leader Yoweri Museveni, 79, in the last presidential election in 2021. But he said there had been state-orchestrated violence and widespread vote rigging, accusations the government rejected.

In recent years he has emerged as the most formidable threat to Museveni, who has ruled Uganda for 38 years.

The NUP top leadership has claimed that a number of its supporters are being held by security agencies in different parts of the country.
